Dr. Heidi Hayes Jacobs is the recognized pioneer in the curriculum
mapping field. Beginning with her bestselling book, Mapping the Big Picture:
Integrating Curriculum and Assessment K-12 (ASCD, 1997), Dr. Jacobs
presented the framework and rationale for a curriculum mapping process that
directly benefits students. As the benefits of mapping became more apparent,
schools across the world embraced this data-gathering technique to improve
communication, collaboration and a more coherent curriculum.
In 2004, Dr. Jacobs edited Getting Results with Curriculum Mapping
(ASCD 2004) which articulated the newest issues and approached them through the
eyes of practicing K-12 educators. Additionally,
research has emerged indicating that curriculum mapping is a significant
factor in improving student performance. Other books and literature, including
Dr. Susan Udelhofen's Keys to Curriculum Mapping (Corwin 2005), have
cemented mapping as a practical, common-sense approach to creating a rigorous
curriculum that best serves students.
Dr. Jacobs serves as the president of
Curriculum
Designers, Inc. and works with schools and districts worldwide in
curriculum mapping as well as other areas.
